Bugisu coffee is grown in the eastern highlands of Uganda, along the Kenyan border, on the fertile slopes of Mount Elgon—an ancient volcano believed to have once been the tallest mountain in Africa.
The region is home to the Bagisu and Sabiny tribes, whose distinctive dialects and traditions reflect the area’s rich cultural heritage. Agriculture is central to daily life, with most families growing coffee alongside bananas, while maize is typically cultivated on separate plots. Small numbers of cattle and poultry also support household livelihoods.
Coffee is washed individually by farmers on their own farms before being delivered to buying stations in Mbale, Bududa, and Budadiri. It is also common for mobile collection trucks to purchase coffee directly from farm gates, transporting it to Kampala for final processing and export.
