Farm Information

These green beans come from Burundi, the little heart-shaped country in Central
Africa. Close to 600,00-800,00 families in Burundi are coffee growers, so in many ways, coffee is the heart
of Burundi. But this wasn’t always the case.

Coffee frst arrived in Burundi in the 1930s when the country was a Belgian colony. The climate in Burundi
was favourable for growing coffee. Mostly all the locally grown coffee was exported to Europe with locals
receiving little to no money or recognition for their work. Post-independence, Burundi’s coffee farms were
privatised; eventually, the industry was abandoned.

The coffee industry began to re-emerge in the 1900s after the civil war. The nation took inspiration from
their Rwandan neighbour’s success, and the industry began to grow due to investment and a healthy mix of
private and state-owned coffee companies.
This particular lot is the product of the Twaranyuzwe Coop. The cooperative is the coming together of nearly
200 smallholder coffee farmers. In 2015, the coop adhered to the Union of Cooperative of Coffee growers
known as COCOCA. Twaranyuzwe translates to ‘we are satisfed’ in the Kinyarwanda language, which is the
core of this coop.
