Tarrazú
Renowned among coffee lovers, Tarrazú in Costa Rica stands as one of the world’s great origins thanks to its unique terroir and time-honored cultivation practices. In 2019, the region achieved a milestone: it was awarded a Denomination of Origin (DOE), much like Champagne in France, ensuring that only coffees genuinely produced within Tarrazú’s specific boundaries can carry its name. Interestingly, this legal certification covers a smaller geographic area than traditional perceptions of “Tarrazú coffee,” which means some growers previously identified with the region may now fall outside the designation. This development emphasizes both the prestige and the exclusivity of coffee grown on Tarrazú’s celebrated slopes.
